Shake Russell
Songwriter and Storyteller
For more than four decades, Texas singer‑songwriter Shake Russell has stood as one of the region’s most beloved and enduring Americana voices. A prolific craftsman of melody and lyric, Shake has written or co‑written hundreds of songs, many of which have found their way onto the Billboard charts and into the repertoires of iconic artists including Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Ricky Skaggs, Clint Black, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Gary P. Nunn. Ricky Skaggs’ hit version of “You’ve Got a Lover” alone has appeared on four of his albums, a testament to the timelessness of Shake’s songwriting. Across his career, Shake has been honored with multiple BMI awards, including two “Million‑Air” distinctions for Clint Black’s recordings of “Put Yourself in My Shoes” and “One More Payment.” The Texas Music Association named him Entertainer of the Year in 2004, 2008, and 2010, and in 2013 he received its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2016, he was inducted into the Texas Songwriters Association Music Legends Hall of Fame. Shake’s signature sound—an intimate blend of folk‑rock, ballads, waltzes, rockabilly, and rhythm and blues—is defined by vivid imagery, inventive phrasing, and the warm, resonant voice that brings his stories to life. A self‑taught left‑handed guitarist who learned to play upside‑down in the style of Elizabeth Cotten, Shake’s musical journey has taken him from his Missouri roots through Austin, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Nashville, and the legendary Coconut Grove. From his early days with John Vandiver’s Ewing Street Times Band to his celebrated partnership with Dana Cooper and his many acclaimed solo albums—including Songs on the Radio, Deep in the West, What This Heart Holds, and Chasing the Song—Shake Russell continues to shape the soundscape of Texas music. Today, he performs primarily as a solo artist, often joined by guitarist Anthony Klonaris, carrying forward a legacy that has made him a true Texas music legend.
